I got an email from the admin assistant at our church today. She wanted our opinion on some good movies to play at our church movie night. If she only knew that 95% of the movies I saw last year were RomComs, the other 5% Misty picked, and they were mostly documentaries. In fact this very evening, while Misty is at her Spiritual Direction class, I am left to choose what I want to put in the DVD player. Will it be 24, the action drama where Jack Bauer saves the world and says "Chloe, I need you to hurry, we don't have much time" 1000 times an episode, or Couger Town. If you are not familiar with Couger Town, it is like Designing Women in 2011. It is awful, but whenever Misty puts it in, I am hooked. I have to pretend that I have a tickle in my throat and cough, because I don't want her to see me laughing.
So I made a list of movies that I thought might be good for the church to see and here it is...
1. Amazing Grace
2. How Stella Got Her Groove Back
3. Legally Blond 2 (I wanted to put this one at the front of the list, but thought the redemption plot was more evident in Amazing Grace.)
4. Valentine's Day
5. Black Gold
Okay, I really just want to tell you about Black Gold. It is a documentary about the coffee trade and Ethiopia. In full disclosure, I have not seen it, but it is number 2 on our queque. So as soon as we send Cougar Town disc 3 back, it shoud be on its way. I have included a trailer for the film below. Fair Trade is a BFD.
Did you know, that during colonial times, one of the most effective things that abolitionists did was to boycott sugar. They did this because the sugar industry was hugely dependent on slavery.
When we buy coffee that is not fair trade, we are communicating via our economic vote that we do not give a damn if slavery is alive and well today. I don't care if you don't buy our coffee, but there is no reason to not buy Fair Trade at the store, its not even that much more expensive any more.
So alas, I encourage you to watch the film. Go to netflix right now and put it in your queue, or go to http://www.blackgoldmovie.com/ the movie's website, buy it and share with your friends.
Lastly TAKE ACTION
1. Spread the word... share the blog, share the movie.
2. Think before you drink.
3. Change the trade rules. Contact your politician to make trade rules fair.
4. Join a campaign.
Here is one last thing for you tactile learners. Click the link below and try out the coffee calculator.
