"What's wrong do you have bad sperm?"

This was a question asked to me by one of my clients at Silver Key, an 87 year old woman who was curious as to why my wife and I were planning on adopting and not having our own kids the conventional way.

To the best of my knowledgethe answer to that question is no, as far as I can tell my little guys are healthy and virile. Keep in mind I have no scientific evidence of this.

One of my healthy
little guys.

The fact is, last year Misty and I decided that having kids the conventional way was not that important to us. We just want kids, and coincidentally there are 5 million kids in Ethiopia that just want parents.

5 million. That's an astounding number. A number I will expound on, I am sure, in later blogs. Until then however, as a reference, lets take a look at Phoenix, AZ. If you ever been there you know it is a city that goes on and on and on. Now replace every man, woman and child with an orphan... it's that many.

So tomorrow, on January 1st I will make the resolution of resolutions. I will resolve to train for the Ascent. The Ascent is a half marathon to the summit of Pikes Peak.

How does training for a piddly half marathon convert to us adopting you ask?

1) Do not call the Ascent piddly. It is a 14,000 foot mountain and all of it is up hill. It makes Heart Break Hill in Boston look like a promenade through the park. If you are a gambling man you than you know the odds are against me.

2) I am going to spend the next eight months training, blogging and raising money to cover the adoption costs that can be upwards of $30,000. So in the vein of Susan G. Komen, Teams in Training and many others I will use the race to solicit donors to help Misty and I adopt one (or a sibling group of two) of the 5 million orphans in Ethiopia.
